Marble Falls football pushes Kerrville Tivy to finish drives
The Marble Falls High School football team lost to Kerrville Tivy 34-0 Sept. 15.
The Mustangs (0-4, District 13-4 Division I) will welcome Fredericksburg (0-4, District 14-4 Division I) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, to Mustang Stadium.
Though the Antlers (4-0, District 13-5A Division II) were undefeated going into the contest, Tivy and Marble Falls played to a 0-0 tie in the first quarter. In fact, Tivy didn’t score until 6 minutes and 23 seconds remained in the first half.
The Antlers recovered a Marble Falls fumble on their 35-yard line then marched 65 yards for the score. The five-play drive ended when senior quarterback Julian Rhodes hit senior receiver Stormy Rhodes for a 26-yard touchdown for the 7-0 advantage.
The two squads exchanged fumbles the next three series. Tivy recovered on the Marble Falls 33-yard line and two needed to plays to extend the lead. Senior running back Aidan Varwig finished the drive with a four-yard run to the end zone with 58 seconds remaining in the second quarter and the 14-0 lead.
The Antlers, who won the coin toss and deferred, received the opening kickoff of the second half and assembled their most complete drive of the game. Tivy marched 75 yards in 15 plays highlighted by a one-yard touchdown run by Julian Rhodes for the 21-0 lead. The drive took 6:18 to complete.
With 9:02 left in the contest, Tivy embarked on a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by halfback option pass from sophomore Guy Flores to Stormy Rhodes for the 28-0 lead.
Marble Falls got the ball on its 25-yard line with 4:15 left and leaned heavily on senior running back Jaime Castillo and junior quarterback Noah Luckie. The Mustangs got to the Tivy 15-yard line and had time for one play. But a tipped ball on the pass was intercepted by senior linebacker Nick Landrum, who returned it 81 yards for the touchdown.
The Antlers had 270 yards of total offense. Julian Rhodes completed 8 of 11 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Varwig had 17 carries for 76 yards and a score, while junior running back Domynik Vasquez had 9 rushes for 41 yards and a score. Stormy Rhodes caught 5 passes for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Mustangs, who had five fumbles and lost three, had 270 yards of total offense, all on the ground and unofficial. Marble Falls used nine different ball carriers led by Castillo’s 22 carries for 135 yards. Sophomore Joaquin Aguilar had 7 carries for 53 yards, senior Dominic Fierro had 7 rushes for 29 yards, and Luckie had 6 carries for 26 yards.
